PRESS RELEASE

B&D Press is an independent micropublisher from Montreal that is mostly interested in all things queer, gay and strange.

PUBLICATIONS:

The Life and Times of Butch Dykes
The zines tell the real stories of women who challenged stale notions of gender and sexuality through their lives and work. They were and are brave people who tried to be authentic to what they perceived as their true identity.

After The Life and Times of Butch Dykes won the Best English Zine award in Montreal’s Expozine, B&D Press was invited to show at the New York Book Fair in 2010. The author Eloisa Aquino was also nominated for the Printed Matter’s Awards for Artists in 2010.

Praise for the series:
“It has everything a zine should have: a good story, a nice hand-made cover, not to mention an important subversive history lesson.” - Expozine Montreal

Read one of them online here.

The series has seven titles:

Gladys Bentley – A jazz musician of the crazy Harlem Renaissance in 1920s America redefines women’s roles.

JD Samson – The gender bender rock/dance star mixes good times and politics.

Chavela Vargas – The romantic singer lived life to the fullest and defied cultural and gender taboos in Mexico. Online here.

Claude Cahun – Photographer, political activist, writer, performer, the French artist is in many ways still an enigma.

Gertrude Stein – The avant-garde writer was a well of contradictions and her immense influence is felt to this day.

Jenny Shimizu – First and only Asian American openly gay super model – and very butch on top of that.

Martina Navratilova – The tennis star broke many new grounds on sport, but her achievements for the gay movement are also impressive.

Judith Butler – The philosopher and public intellectual would probably laugh at being called a "butch dyke" after spending her life fighting rigid gender definitions.

Skinny Leg, by Jenny Lin

Skinny Leg is an illustrated memoir about Lin's bike accident in Montreal. At times melancholy, at times funny, the book constantly seems to ask, "How can an extreme experience feel so banal? How can a banal experience feel so life-changing?"

This book is a version of the original handmade pop-up artist book  that can be viewed here.
